Got a Tip?

Edgar Wright’s Next Film Will Be A Documentary About The Rock Band Sparks

We’ve been waiting to hear what filmmaker Edgar Wright’s next film would be. Would he go back and do the rumored “Baby Driver 2?” Would he do something completely new and awesome? Well, the answer is actually a bit more surprising than that. He’s going to make a documentary.

In fact, the director is currently in the middle of production now on a documentary about musical artists Ron and Russel Mael, better known as Sparks. In an interview with IndieWire, Wright talked a little about the project and where he’s at in the production.

“I already shot their London concert in late May. The rest of is it [to be determined] and we’re currently scouring the archives,” Wright said. “I have been a fan of them since I saw them on ‘Top Of The Pops’ in 1979 — and when I had ‘Beat The Clock’ on vinyl.”

If you’re not familiar with Sparks, the band consists of brothers Ron and Russel Mael, who released their first album back in 1971. Since then, they’ve released almost two dozen albums and their brand of rock/pop has influenced bands such as New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and even Nirvana. Their most recent record, Hippopotamus was released in 2017.

Wright, of course, is the director of films like “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and the aforementioned “Baby Driver.” This is his first documentary, but not his first foray into a music project. He’s directed numerous videos, including a recent video for Beck.

No word on a release date, but from the sound of things, it appears that Wright is pretty far along and we may see the film sooner than later.
