Movie, television, and pop culture buffs have plenty of games that they flock to in order to show their knowledge and skill. Some prefer to play something like “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” where you try to connect two actors through movies that they’ve been in and whoever has the shortest list from point A to point B wins. Others prefer to play the Cinephile: A Card Game, Ripley’s Movie Buff Trivia Card Game, or even the Blockbuster game. Whichever you prefer to spend your time, though, there’s a new game being released you may want to add to the rotation on your next game night.

Made by movie lovers, Oscilloscope is set to release a card game of “cinematic proportions.” Named Celluloid, the card game is said to be a lighting-quick multiplayer game that uses prompts to trigger memories… and fuel a little healthy competition.
In the deck, there are 120 cards that you can use in two different ways to play “Celluloid.” The first, as described on the game’s website is called Screen Test, where players will shuffle the deck, deal the cards, turn one card over, and then go around to name a movie that corresponds with the marquee card and the cards in their hand. The goal is to name as many movies and get rid of as many cards in your hand as possible.
The second way to play is called Double Feature. The way you play is similar to other card games where players shuffle the cards, turn over two marquee cards, and go around to name a movie that applies to both of the cards together. If someone can’t name a movie, they’re out. Once the first player is eliminated, a third card is flipped over and the process continues. You keep flipping cards and naming movies until one player stands. They collect all of the cards from that round and the game resets. The person with the most cards at the end of however many rounds you’ve decided to play wins.
It sounds like whichever way you decide to play, the competition could get pretty intense. If you’re up for the challenge, Oscilloscope will release the game, illustrated by Juniper Rose, to the public on July 11, 2023, through their online store. The game is priced at $19.00.
