Got a Tip?

David Lynch’s Main Requirement For Doing ‘Fabelmans’ Was A Bag Of Cheetos: “Any Chance I Can, I Get Them”

Sometimes you read a quote and think that it can’t possibly be real. You check the source, make sure it’s not The Onion, and if you’re lucky, then you’ve found something so amazing, you just have to share it with the world. This is the exact sequence of events that transpired after I read a quote from David Lynch about why he was willing to take on a small role in Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film, “The Fabelmans.”

Speaking to Empire, David Lynch was asked about the situation that led to him taking on a role in “The Fabelmans.” In the film, the filmmaker plays none other than legendary director, John Ford. And for many, it’s a highlight in the film. But why would Lynch agree to act in the film, when he typically says no to those sorts of roles? Would you believe it was for some Cheetos? You read that right.

“At first I didn’t want to do it,” Lynch said. “And the reason is, when it comes to acting, I’ve purposely tried to stay away from it, giving the likes of Harrison Ford and George Clooney a chance at their careers.”

Obviously, you can’t help but feel like Lynch is being a bit cheeky when it comes to his reasons for turning down roles, as if he is out there stealing Harrison Ford and George Clooney’s paychecks. Though, now that you mention it, where is David Lynch as Indiana Jones or Batman? This needs to happen.

So, when he’s asked what his major requirement was for accepting the role in “The Fabelmans,” Lynch gives us the quote of the year.

“Well, Cheetos, number one, I love them,” he said. “And any chance I can, I get them. But I know that they’re not exactly health food. So when I do leave the house and I get a chance to… But I don’t get them that often, honestly. If I do get them, I want a big bag. Because once you start… you need to have a lot before you could slow down and actually stop. Otherwise, with a small bag, then you’d be prowling for days to find more […] It’s incredible flavor.”

If that doesn’t make your heart melt just a little, you’re dead inside. When you look at that quote from Lynch, or perhaps read about how another iconic filmmaker, John Carpenter, only wants to play video games all day, you can’t help but feel joy. Lynch is a filmmaker who has influenced generations of filmmakers and storytellers. He’s someone who opens his mouth and people hang on every word. And when you ask this iconic filmmaker and expert storyteller why he took a rare opportunity to act in a major awards season player, he mentions his love of bright orange snack food. Incredible.

Thank you for being you, Mr. David Lynch.
