The partnership between James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions was cemented early last year when Blumhouse acquired the genre shingle allowing for more output with Wan helping develop new horror projects. Their next theatrical release will be “M3GAN 2.0” which landed a solid release date of June 27 from Universal Pictures and they’ve dropped a first-look teaser trailer (See below).
If the title didn’t already clue you in, this will be a direct sequel to the 2023 global hit “M3GAN” exploring the prescient danger of AI being too accessible, even in the hands of children. It was a bit of a sleeper hit for Universal as it raked in an impressive $180 million on a modest budget of $12 million. Making it quite the windfall for Universal leading to the speedy development of this sequel, striking fast while the property is hot as a pistol with horror fans.
We’ll be seeing the return of the creepy dancing robot which takes place two years after the events of the original pic with Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprising their respective roles. Writer/director Gerard Johnstone is also back to help flesh out this world with the second chapter of the newly minted franchise that involves a military application of the technology.
An official logline from Universal reads as follows:
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules. Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But, as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I. bitch is about to meet her match.
It hasn’t exactly been rosy for Universal and Blumhouse in 2025, the duo is still licking its wounds after their new take on the “Wolf Man” recently struggled to find an audience and is expected to be a financial flop. Although, we suspect this won’t be the end of Blumhouse handling the Universal Monsters, perhaps, Atomic Monster will want to help moving forward.
“M3GAN 2.0” as previously mentioned at the top is coming out on June 27 and will hopefully lean into the ridiculous satirical side, again.
