Well, with the impressive preview totals, we started to realize that the trade projections for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” were underestimating the latest MCU installment’s earning potential, as the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film has had one of the biggest opening weekends on record, crossing a billion dollars. It went beyond the studio’s weekend projections of $927 million in a press release that circulated over the weekend.

That revised number, from trades like Deadline, is a massive $932 million (more than what six out of the eight live-action “Spider-Man” installments have made in their total box office runs), making it the second-biggest global opening behind Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame,” which was $1.22 billion (sort of an untouchable goal to overtake that figure, if we’re honest).
That share of the overseas market includes an estimated $121 million haul from China alone (via Variety), as the Middle Kingdom’s audience tends to be extremely picky about what Western films they embrace and what they’re allowed to be exposed to via strict government censors; it’s a great start for what is expected to be a great tally over there.
This comes after the movie did end up surpassing the domestic opening of “Endgame” at $360 million, holding the record for the largest domestic weekend opening, so nothing to be upset about.
We wouldn’t be entirely surprised if “Brand New Day” ended up making more than the total cume of the last three films, placing it just ahead of $3 billion. But that’s just our speculation based on these massive numbers and not a lot of competition in August. Whatever the case, there is certainly going to be early talk from Sony/Marvel to get Cretton and star Tom Holland locked up for “Spider-Man 5” (we wouldn’t be shocked if two installments are greenlit to complete a new trilogy) since “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is likely well into the profit range after the first weekend in theaters.
