Got a Tip?

Alden Ehrenreich Teases ‘Solo’ Sequel Discussions But Isn’t Sure He’d Want To Return

Even with the massive debate surrounding films like ‘The Last Jedi’ and ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ both “Star Wars” installments still earned more than $1 billion at the box office in spite of the controversy. The same can’t be said about ‘Solo.’ That film not only divided audiences (as much of the Disney-era films in the franchise have done), but it also was a relatively big box office disappointment. And as far as a sequel goes (storylines were hinted at pretty heavily in ‘Solo’), not even the film’s star, Alden Ehrenreich, has any idea if it’ll happen or if he’ll even want to star in it.

Speaking to Esquire, while promoting his most recent project, Peacock’sBrave New World,” Ehrenreich was asked about the future of the ‘Solo’ franchise. While he admitted that he has yet to see ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ or “The Mandalorian,” he was mum about a potential ‘Solo’ sequel. In fact, he’s not even sure he’d want to star in it.

“It depends on what it is. It depends on how it’s done. It depends if it feels innate to the story,” Ehrenreich said about playing Han Solo once again.

Of course, as mentioned, the first film did set up the idea of future films and/or TV series. There’s the most basic idea of just doing a typical sequel and following the next adventure for Han and his crew. Or, there’s also the other idea of following a character like Qi’ra (played by Emilia Clarke) and her descent into the “Star Wars” crime underbelly alongside the likes of Darth Maul. Both seem like feasible options, particularly if you want to create a show for Disney+ or something.

And while he won’t confirm that a new appearance from Han Solo is in the cards, the actor does hint that there are some discussions about a new ‘Solo’ project.

“No, I don’t know anything about that. I mean, you know, I think our movie was kind of the last of the conventional-era ‘Star Wars’ movie release time,” he said. “I’ve heard soooome stuff, but nothing concrete.”

With Disney+ continuing with the prequel ideas, with series such as “Obi-Wan” and “Cassian Andor,” a ‘Solo’ series or sequel film seems like an obvious next step. We’ll just have to wait and see if that’s something that is going to happen. There are plenty of announced “Star Wars” projects with no plots revealed, so maybe one is even already in development.
