Alexander Payne Is Developing A Danish-Language Film

Alexander Payne is not a super prolific filmmaker. Sure, most everything he directs ends up earning acclaim and awards recognition, but he just doesn’t direct all that often. In the past 25 years since the release of his acclaimed “Election,” he’s only made six more features. But that might be changing, as the filmmaker is headed to Europe for a new film.

According to ScreenDaily, Alexander Payne is developing a new Danish-language film that would be fully funded by European financiers. Obviously, this would mark his first non-English film. Exact details about the plot are not known at this time, but when speaking to the outlet, he mentioned how he’s attracted to the idea of a European production because of the way films get released there. He said that “it’s less hard to get theatrical real estate” in Europe.

In addition to this mystery Danish production, Payne is still said to be working on a sequel to the aforementioned “Election.” Reese Witherspoon is set to reprise her role from the film, but Payne isn’t happy with the current deal for the feature. According to the filmmaker, the initial deal was to make it a streaming movie, but he wants a theatrical release.

As if that wasn’t enough, it appears Payne is also interested in working on a French project, but that doesn’t seem to be as far along as the development of his other projects.

Payne revealed that he has yet to write the script for his Danish project, so we will still have to wait quite a while before that sees the light of day.
