If you want something done right, I guess you have to do it yourself. After helming the period thriller “Woman of the Hour” from 2023, actress Anna Kendrick has been tasked to helm her Netflix film “Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” as the streaming feature lost its second director. Allowing the popular actress best known from the “Pitch Perfect” franchise to do more work in front of and behind the camera.
This big directorial shift and update comes to us from outlets such as Variety, after both former attached filmmakers Maggie Betts (“The Burial”) and Leslye Headland (“The Acolyte,” “Russian Doll”) were tapped for the movie, only for them to eventually depart from it. Although from the reporting, it’s unclear what happened that led to their departures. Most common blanket reasons (real or not) tend to be creative differences or scheduling conflicts, but none were cited.

The outlet also provided a brief synposis of the project:
“Follows a fictional Old Hollywood star who gives a final interview to an unknown journalist. During her tell-all, the fiercely private celebrity pulls back the curtain on the true story of her infamous seven marriages and other wild tales of showbiz scandals, betrayals, and woes.”
An original draft of the script was penned by Liz Tigelaar (“Little Fires Everywhere”), an adaptation of the 2017 Taylor Jenkins Reid novel of the same name, with Francesca Sloane (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Atlanta,” “Fargo,” “Big Little Lies” Season 3) tackling the latest revisions.
Other Kendrick projects on the horizon include the Chris Rock-directed high-profile A24 film and the Seth Rogen co-starring comedy “Babies.”
We’ll be curious to see who else ultimately joins the call sheet of “Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo” now that it seems like all engines are go with Kendrick in the director’s chair.
