'Ant-Man And The Wasp' Trailer: A Hero Needs A Partner

As the newly-updated old adage goes, nothing is certain except death and taxes and Marvel blockbusters. With the forthcoming “Ant-Man And The Wasp,” the question everyone is asking is: where were Ant-Man and The Wasp during “Avengers: Infinity War” the ending of which we won’t talk about here but let’s just say the results were cataclysmic. It’s a question Marvel teased yesterday, but not answered today in the new trailer.

Peyton Reed returns to direct this second installment while the unfairly-charming Paul Rudd reprising his role as Ant-Man. Evangeline Lilly is back and, this time around, she gets the superhero makeover, becoming the titular Wasp.

“Ant-Man And The Wasp” picks up where… it’s unclear, after “Avengers: Infinity War,” or after “Captain America: Civil War“? Before both? Obviously it makes a huge difference either way, but the trailer cleverly avoids all those details. But the story returns with Scott Long (Rudd) struggling to juggle heroism with fatherhood. Of course, heroism wins out per the with-great-power-comes-great-responsibility binding law of superhero movies, so Scott dons the Ant-Man suit as soon as he is nudged towards it. This time, though, he’s got a partner: Hope van Dyne (Lilly) as the Wasp.

Joining Rudd and Lilly is a pretty impressive list of actors, including Michael Peña, Michael Douglas, Bobby CannavaleJudy Greer, Abby Ryder Fortson, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David DastmalchianMichelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, and Randall Park. Here is the official synopsis:

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink: “Ant-Man and The Wasp.” In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past.

“Ant-Man And The Wasp” infests theaters this summer on July 6. When do you think it’s actually set? Any clues that you see? Our guess is pre ‘Infinity War’ and after ‘Civil War,’ because it doesn’t seem like half the world… oh, well that would be a spoiler if you haven’t seen it.
