Got a Tip?

Back And To The Left: ‘Thor’ Poster Looks Familiar On A Number Of Levels

Poster design is a difficult art. With only one picture, you’ve got to get across the tone, and at least some of the plot, of the film, highlight your star or stars, and provide an iconic image that people will immediately associate with your film. The difficulty of getting it right on all counts is where Photoshop monstrosities like the now infamous original poster for “The King’s Speech” comes from, but it still feels odd that seemingly every sci-fi actioner of 2011 has essentially the same poster.

Only a couple of days ago we heard how director Jon Favreau was apparently upset by the close resemblance between the one-sheet for his film, “Cowboys & Aliens” and the teen film “I Am Number Four,” and we hope that Favreau doesn’t come across the brand new poster for “Thor,” the Marvel stablemate of his “Iron Man,” because it’s got the same look at the hero’s behind that seemed to piss Favreau off before.

Not only that, but the image is also the one that debuted on the front of Empire magazine a few months back, albeit given a new, somewhat baffling “Schindler’s List“-style color pallet. Still, we suppose it’s somewhat iconic.

Indeed, we wouldn’t be surprised for this to be the start of a recurring black-and-white-and-red theme in the lead up to “The Avengers,” with each character revealed one by one in a similar style. Indeed, we can exclusively reveal that the poster for “Captain America” will involve Chris Evans shot from behind, looking imposing, and turning his head backwards slightly…

The first official trailer for the film — said to be a cut down version of the Comic-Con footage that leaked earlier in the summer — will go online this afternoon. We’re not at all sold on Marvel’s norse epic, but there’s still plenty of time to get convinced before “Thor” hits theaters on May 6th, 2011. [Yahoo]
