“The Toxic Avenger” is making a grand return as a new movie is coming from actor turned director Macon Blair with quite an impressive cast that features Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), Elijah Wood (“Ready or Not: Here I Come”), Kevin Bacon (“The Bondsman”), and Jacob Tremblay (“The Predator”).
A new trailer for the brutally violent satirical send up of the superhero genre found it’s way online over the weekend as the pic has been getting some buzzy early reviews ahead of it’s theatrical release from the team of Cineverse/Bloody Disgusting, Iconic Events Releasing, and Legendary Pictures (studio behind “Dune,” “A Minecraft Movie,” and MonsterVervse films) on August 29.
Here is an official synopsis for “The Toxic Avenger”:
When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze (Dinklage), is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he’s transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.
Blair, a producer on Jeremy Saulnier‘s “Green Room” and “Rebel Ridge,” also wrote the remake and previously cut his teeth as a feature director on “I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore” which starred Wood and Melanie Lynskey, who recently reunited on the acclaimed genre series “Yellowjackets.”
Toxie became a bit of a minor cultural phenomena in the 80-90s with a string of brutally hyper-violent feature films from Troma Entertainment (the studio that gave birth to James Gunn‘s directorial career) that for whatever reason led to a short-lived cartoon series, action figures, comic books, and even video games aimed at kids with “Toxic Crusaders.”
