'Bumblebee' Writer Christina Hodson To Write Script For WB's 'Batgirl'

It wasn’t that long ago that everyone rejoiced at the idea of filmmaker Joss Whedon taking on the “Batgirl” film. The director, who has a long history of writing female leads, was seen as the perfect hire for the project. But then, everything started to unravel for the filmmaker. Some questionable things from Whedon’s past came to haunt him, as did the horrible response to the train wreck that is “Justice League.” In response, Warner Bros. and Joss parted ways, with some excuse as the reason.

At the time, it was thought that the “Batgirl” project was dead, as well. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. A new report says that WB has hired Christina Hodson to write a script for the “Batgirl” film. Hodson is one of the hottest up-and-coming writers in Hollywood, having written three separate scripts that appeared on The Black List. She’s also writing the upcoming “Bumblebee” film, that’s supposed to reinvigorate the “Transformers” franchise, as well as a “Fugitive” reboot that is in the works.

Hodson is also rumored to have written a “Birds of Prey” script for WB. Maybe they were so pleased with how that turned out that they gave her a shot at “Batgirl?”

The renewed interest in a “Batgirl” film comes after female filmmakers and writers came out of the woodwork to throw their names in the ring for Warner Bros. After Whedon left and said he couldn’t crack the story for the film, numerous female creators begged WB for a shot at the film. It looks like Hodson is the writer the studio is willing to bet on.

With the future of the DC film universe seemingly in limbo, this new iteration of “Batgirl” joins about a dozen unconfirmed projects and only a few actual announced films. Hopefully, Warner Bros. is going to announce a more concrete slate of films soon because this revolving door of projects is getting difficult to keep track of.
