Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet took the film world by storm in 2017 with “Call Me by Your Name.” Now they team up again for another coming-of-age tale, but one that’s much more macabre.
Based on Camille DeAngelis‘ 2015 YA novel of the same name, “Bones And All” follows Maren Yearly, a young woman who “wants the same things we all do,” but harbors a bloody secret: she has an insatiable appetite for human flesh. After her father abandons her, Maren falls in with other cannibals on the margins of society, including Chalamet’s Lee. Will she find love and belonging in this new makeshift family, or will Maren face a more gruesome tragedy?
Alongside Russell and Chalamet, “Bones And All” also stars Mark Rylance, André Holland, Chloë Sevigny, and Michael Stuhlbarg. Jessica Harper, Francesca Scorsese, director David Gordon Green, Anna Cobb, and Jake Horowitz round out the main cast.
David Kajganich adapts DeAngelis’ novel for “Bones And All.” It’s his third collaboration with Guadagnino after 2015’s “A Bigger Splash” and 2018’s “Suspiria.” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross compose music for the film. Marco Costa, who first worked with Guadagnino on his TV show “We Are Who We Are,” edits the film. He’s also the editor on Guadagnino’s next film, the tennis romantic comedy “Challengers,” out next summer. Arseni Khachaturan is the film’s cinematographer.
“Bones And All” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. The Playlist’s review called it “for all of the stomach-churning gluttony, a story brimming with extraordinary romanticism.” After the film completes its festival run, which includes screenings at Telluride Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and the New York Film Festival, it hits theaters on November 23.
