In case you haven’t noticed, you’re now in the midst of the awards season at the multiplex, which means bye-bye bloated butter-soaked blockbusters, and hello movies of substance and value. Two weeks ago, Alfonso Cuaron‘s “Gravity” dropped into orbit, last weekend Paul Greengrass‘ “Captain Phillips” got in the water and this upcoming weekend, Fox Searchlight will start the rollout of their (current) Oscar frontrunner, Steve McQueen‘s “12 Years A Slave.”
Slavery movies (unless directed by Quentin Tarantino and featuring a hip score and cool dialogue) are generally a tough sell, but so far, ‘Slave’ is riding all kinds of buzz, starting with winning the Audience Award at TIFF. From Telluride to the New York Film Festival, audiences have been awed and shaken by the pic, with Chiwetel Ejiofor playing a free man tricked into slavery, and enduring until he can figure out a way to secure his freedom again. And below, are new images, a scene from the film and the full Q&A from NYFF to give you as much background as possible before you buy your ticket.
“12 Years A Slave” starts rolling out on October 18th.
