Chloë Grace Moretz Was Warned Not To Be Outspoken & Distances Herself From 'Shadow In The Cloud' Writer Max Landis

It really is difficult to believe that Chloë Grace Moretz is only 22-years-old. With a film career that spans almost 15 years, the young actress has starred in dozens of projects, including major blockbusters, terrible horror films, great indie dramas, and R-rated comedies. Despite her young age, Moretz is someone that’s been around the block, so to speak, in regards to her filmography. And through it all, she’s continued to be outspoken in regards to social issues and the way women have been treated in the industry. So much so, that people actually have warned her against talking so much.

And in a new interview with The Guardian, Moretz explains why she’s so outspoken and throws a little shade at a fairly big name in the business, in the process.

Over the last year, the actress has been seen in films like “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” “Suspiria,” and “Greta.” In a business where a lot of big name folks take time off, Moretz keeps chugging along. And somehow she still finds time to chime in about the current state of the industry as it relates to women.

Her next film is “Shadow in the Cloud,” which is a thriller about a female WWII fighter pilot. But when the film was announced, people didn’t really care about the fact that Moretz would play a pilot or what the actual plot was. Everyone was talking about the fact that Max Landis wrote the script, and the screenwriter has been involved in some sexual misconduct allegations over the last year. So, when Moretz was asked about the fact that she is involved in a film with Landis, she doesn’t mince words and says exactly what she wants.

Moretz said, “We’ve completely distanced ourselves from [Landis]. We’ve rewritten it several times now. His name is kind of far away from the project.”

She continued, “Communication is key and being held accountable is key. It’s a really horrific thing to hear those stories.”

This leads us back to the original thought that Moretz isn’t afraid to speak her mind about issues, even when they involve high-profile people, such as Landis or Louis C.K. (whom she talked about last year after starring in a film directed by the controversial comedian).

“Now, everyone says it’s cool to be woke,” she explained. “When I was doing it before, people were like: ‘You’re crazy. You’re going lose your career over this. You’re so outspoken.’”

Who were the people warning her about the potential loss of her career? Well, the exact people that probably had something to hide.

“Studio stuff and producers. The people that make decisions,” she revealed.

But she goes on to say that it’s not the old, crusty white men in their business suits that warned her about speaking out. Sometimes the criticism came from surprising people.

“Sometimes both genders, which is even crazier and kind of sad,” she said. “A broad spectrum of different people were like: ‘Is this what she wants to be? Does she want to be the outspoken girl?’ And it’s like: ‘Well, yeah. Respectfully, F that.’”

As mentioned, Moretz can most recently be seen in starring opposite Isabelle Huppert in the thriller “Greta.”
