2023 has not been a wonderful year for Marvel Studios. Much like many of the other studios producing big-budget franchise films, Marvel was hit with some really low box office numbers this year, as well as some surprisingly harsh critical and fan reviews. This has led to various reports over the past month or so, citing trouble behind the scenes with Marvel Studios looking to do something drastic to reignite enthusiasm for the MCU. One such rumor said that the studio would be interested in bringing back the original ‘Avengers’ actors for a new film. Well, if that’s the case, Marvel Studios should really talk to Chris Evans because he knows nothing about it.
Speaking on The View, Chris Evans talked about the rumors that he would be returning to the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in a new Marvel Studios film. While he understands the rumors are out there and never say never, but he doesn’t know anything about future plans and isn’t sure he’d come back anyway.
“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans said. “I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting [Robert Downey, Jr.], and [Chris] Hemsworth, and Scarlett [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back!”
He added, “No one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”
Honestly, this is exactly the same response he gives whenever he is asked about coming back to the MCU. Evans doesn’t ever rule it out, but he makes it seem like it’s really unlikely to ever happen. Of course, if he was going to come back, he’s not going to blab about it right now anyway.
When the rumors of a return of various ‘Avengers’ actors were talked about, many people just assumed it would happen in the forthcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars.” That’s the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga and would be a perfect place to reintroduce classic characters (both alive and dead) thanks to the use of different realities. Chris Evans could return as Steve Rogers but it’s not necessarily the same Steve Rogers from the original films. This is something that is done all the time in comic books, and it would fit perfectly in ‘Secret Wars.’
That said, it’s still too early to know for sure what’s happening. ‘Secret Wars’ isn’t expected to arrive in theaters until 2027. So there’s still plenty of time for Marvel Studios to get on the phone with Evans and make it happen.
