So far, there hasn’t been anything truly terrible in 2021. Obviously, we still have holdovers from the past year including election discussion and the ongoing pandemic, but people seem excited about the possibilities of what a new year can bring. And to help kick things off, apparently, we’re getting a film based on the Rubik’s Cube. Yes, the puzzle that most people hate and is an icon of a past generation of toys is getting a feature film.
No, we’re not sure why we’re getting a Rubik’s Cube film. It does sound dreadfully boring and a clear example of Hollywood trying to make a franchise out of anything. But it’s happening, and “The LEGO Movie” filmmaker Christopher Miller really doesn’t want you to blame his film for whatever comes next, including this new film.

In a tweet, Miller said, “3 things: 1) it is theoretically possible to make a good movie based on almost anything 2) Doesn’t mean you should 3) Let’s not blame The Lego Movie for this, pretty please.”
Obviously, Miller is referencing the fact that he (along with collaborator Phil Lord) was able to take a seemingly dull toy like LEGO blocks and turn them into a massive film and TV franchise that is highly enjoyable. So, you’re going to get fans who immediately want the duo to be involved with the Rubik’s Cube film. Regardless of who ends up taking control of the film, it appears that the producers aren’t just happy with one successful feature. They’re hoping for a “complex Rubik’s universe,” according to Deadline.
“I’ve had a personal and nostalgic connection to the Rubik’s Cube from my early days in India,” Producer Ashok Amritraj said. “I am thrilled to partner with Endeavor Content and Rubik’s/Smiley and look forward to creating a wonderful and complex Rubik’s universe.”
Added Graham Taylor and Chris Rice, Co-Presidents of Endeavor Content, “The Rubik’s Cube is an iconic and family-friendly brand. In partnership with Hyde Park, we look forward to creating film, television, and game show content for global audiences.”
No plot, director, writer, or actors have been announced for the Rubik’s Cube movie. But we’re going to go out on a limb and say Chris Miller (and thus, probably Phil Lord) aren’t going to be involved. And honestly, as silly as a Rubik’s Cube film sounds on paper, odds are that Lord & Miller could have made it awesome.
