Christopher Nolan Says 'Tenet's' Action Is "Beyond Anything We've Ever Attempted Before"

Though other studios have swooped in to beat it to the big screen, Christopher Nolan’s new film, “Tenet,” will still be the first major blockbuster of the summer movie season when it arrives on July 31. And according to the filmmaker, “Tenet” might just be the most cinematic of all his features.

We’ve known for a while now that Nolan has been pushing hard to make sure “Tenet” is released exclusively in theaters. Partially, this is because the filmmaker has been a strong proponent of the theatrical experience and using his film to help boost the sales of theaters that have been closed for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic seems like a no-brainer. But it appears that his insistence that “Tenet” be enjoyed in theaters is also because this is a feature that stands above the rest of his filmography as the one that demands the big screen experience most.

In a message sent to CineEurope participants recently (via Deadline), Nolan talked about the importance of seeing his new film in theaters:

“We’re in the final throes of it. I don’t want to say too much about it other than we’re extraordinarily excited about what we’ve been able to do with this material. I think of all the films that I’ve made, this is perhaps the one that is most designed for the audience experience, the big screen experience. This is a film whose image and sound really needs to be enjoyed in your theaters on the big screen and we’re very very excited for you to see what it is we’ve done. We’ve made big films in the past, but this is a film whose global reach and level of action is beyond anything we’ve ever attempted before. I think we only would have been able to pull off this film with the level of experience we’ve had doing action films in the past. The movie has an incredible ensemble cast led by John David Washington who gives the most extraordinary and iconic performance as the protagonist at the heart of Tenet and I cannot wait for you guys to see what he’s done with his character. I’m very much looking forward to sharing the film with you. I’m going to get back to finishing it right now and I look forward to your reaction.”

Considering this is the director who gave us the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy, “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk,” and “Inception,” it’s difficult to imagine what “Tenet” is able to do that makes it clearly the most cinematic action film of his career. That being said, if this isn’t a hyperbolic statement and is actually the truth, that might make venturing out to cinemas during a pandemic a tempting proposition.

Of course, that’s exactly what he’s hoping to make you feel.

So, are you going to #RiskItForTenet or just wait for the Blu-ray?
