“Six seasons and a movie” is a mantra that has kept the hope alive for “Community” fans over the past several years. What was once a joke turned into a rallying cry and then a reality, as it was recently announced that the canceled sitcom, “Community,” is getting a new film in the future. And now, Dan Harmon is shedding a bit more light on who is set to appear and who is definitely not.
Over the weekend at New York Comic-Con, “Community” creator Dan Harmon did talk about the upcoming film spinoff. And while he wasn’t able to share many details, he did say that he doesn’t think Chevy Chase will return. Not only that, he joked that Chase probably isn’t legally allowed to appear.
“I don’t even know if it’s legal for him to come back,” Harmon said about Chase. “That may be out of my hands. There may be something I sign for with an insurance company.”
Of course, if you’re a fan of “Community,” you’re well aware that Chase’s character was written out of the latter seasons of the series after some behind-the-scenes drama between the actor and Harmon (along with other people involved with the series). It’s plenty Google-able, so go ahead and get all the dirt, if you’re interested because there is quite a bit of dirt.
If you’re curious who Harmon is collaborating with on the recently announced film, the creator did mention who he will be co-writing with, Andrew Guest, who is someone “Community” fans are probably very familiar with.
“I’m working with Andrew Guest,” said Harmon. “He was a great ‘Community’ writer in the…I don’t want to say the peak days, but there was classic ‘Community.’ He wrote the ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ episode. He’s going to help me make sure that I don’t pull a Harmon with that script getting executed so that we can actually deliver it and start shooting it.”
The end of the clip features Harmon saying that he’s not able to confirm any of the cast as returning for the film. That said, in a Variety interview, he does in fact say that he thinks everyone (minus Chevy, of course) would return. Yes, that even includes Donald Glover.
“I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it’s just the deal isn’t official or wasn’t official. It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald,” He said. “So I believe he is coming back. I think if there’s names missing from a list, it’s because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out.”
Honestly, there will be a pretty big segment of the “Community” fanbase who will be bummed if Glover doesn’t make a return for the film. Glover didn’t appear in the final season of the series, and his absence was very much a sore subject for fans, as many believe he was vital for the chemistry of the series.
A release date for the Peacock release of the “Community” film has yet to be announced.
