When was the last time rock ‘n’ roll was truly dangerous? In an era when bands and artists carefully craft everything from their online persona to a well-rehearsed stage show, there are few acts where you feel like anything can happen. And it’s that quality that makes The Stooges so enduring to this day, and an absolute favorite of director Jim Jarmusch, whose documentary about the band, “Gimme Danger,” is about as close as you can get to them without meeting them in person. Featuring Jim Osterberg (aka Iggy Pop), Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, James Williamson, Steve Mackay, Mike Watt, Kathy Asheton, and Danny Fields, the documentary traces the history of the band that emerged from Ann Arbor, Michigan, amidst a countercultural revolution, and whose powerful and aggressive style of rock-‘n’-roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s. Assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B, and free jazz, the band planted the seeds for what would be called punk and alternative rock in the decades that followed.
