'Persuasion': Dakota Johnson To Star In Carrie Cracknell's Modern Take On The Jane Austen Novel

Jane Austen film and TV adaptations are plentiful. I mean, how many times have we seen projects like “Sense and Sensibility,” “Pride and Prejudice,” and “Emma” brought to life on screen? But even though we’ve seen these stories done a number of times before, it doesn’t mean that new versions can’t be made that pique our interest, such as a new version of “Persuasion” that is being developed at Netflix.

According to THR, Dakota Johnson has signed on to star in a new, modern take on the Jane Austen classic, “Persuasion.” And even though we are big fans of Johnson, the project is also intriguing as it will be the feature directorial debut of filmmaker, Carrie Cracknell. Previous to this, Cracknell is best known as a theatre director, who recently directed a Broadway play, “Sea Wall/A Life,” starring Jake Gyllenhall and Tom Sturridge.

Here’s the synopsis for the new take on “Persuasion”:

Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.

Johnson is probably best known for her work in the “50 Shades of Grey” features, but she has been in a number of high-profile projects since those films were released. She’s starred in Luca Guadagnino’sSuspiria” remake, as well as “Bad Times at the El Royale,” “Our Friend,” “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” and most recently, “The High Note.” She’s next expected to show up in the feature film, “The Lost Daughter,” by filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal.

It’s unclear when filming might begin on “Persuasion,” but with Johnson and Cracknell involved, we’re definitely intrigued to see how this new Jane Austen adaptation might take shape.
