Typically, we don’t cover every commercial that features a famous person in it. If we did that, we’d have a non-stop barrage of ads, as companies have utilized celebrities to sell products for decades. But what makes the new Chopard commercial so much fun isn’t just that Julia Roberts is dancing her heart out, but that it’s all brought to us by filmmaker Xavier Dolan.

Folks who regularly read The Playlist know that we are fans of Dolan’s work, especially as a filmmaker. Films like “I Killed My Mother,” “Laurence Anyways,” “Tom at the Farm,” “Mommy,” and his most recent, “Matthias & Maxime,” have shown just how interesting and unique Dolan is as a director. And though there isn’t a narrative that immediately jumps out at you over the minute-long ad for Chopard, it’s clear that Dolan was able to capture Roberts in a way that is sure to delight fans and sell a ton of watches. Hell, I don’t even wear a watch and am about as far away from the target audience for a Chopard piece, but that ad did its job.

Obviously, the pairing of Roberts and Dolan for an ad does bring up the idea of the two of them working on something bigger in the future. Now, that doesn’t seem like something that will be happening anytime soon, as Roberts has a ton of projects on her slate, and Dolan is working as a writer and director for a new TV series, “The Night Logan Woke Up.” But hey, there’s plenty of time in the future for these two to hook up one more time.
