Got a Tip?

Dan Harmon Has Spoken To WB About ‘Rick & Morty’ Film & Is Still Working On ‘Community’ Film Script

For a show as popular as it is, “Rick & Morty” has experienced a ton of behind-the-scenes drama over the course of its run. However, up until the last couple of years, a lot of that drama remained unknown to the general public. Well, after Justin Roiland’s abuse allegations came out, fans were made aware of just how much Dan Harmon has been carrying the show on his back since the beginning. And it appears the co-creator has his sights set on a big screen adventure for his animated series.

In a big profile over at THR, Dan Harmon opened up about the “Rick & Morty” drama, as well as other things in his career, including updates about the “Community” film. But when it came to “Rick & Morty,” the series’ co-creator teased the possibility of a feature film coming. Apparently, the profile says Harmon had “serious conversation” with the executives at Warner Bros. about possibly sending “Rick & Morty” to the big screen.

While the plot is still unknown, the idea would generally follow the formula that was set forth by the folks at “South Park,” who treated the feature as a “super-episode.” So, it appears that Harmon would approach the film in the same sort of way.

Speaking of movies, Harmon provided an update about the long-in-development “Community” film. It is still very much a thing that will happen, but he is working hard on the script alongside former “Community” writer, Andrew Guest. The reason he is taking his time on the script and not rushing into the project is because he wants to do things right and not treat the film in the same way he did the series, where he was notorious for doing last-minute rewrites.

“I don’t want these now-superstar people, like Emmy-winning Donald Glover, who are bothering to gather out of loyalty to this thing, to come back and once again be getting blue pages run down by an intern that totally contradict what they spent all night memorizing,” said Harmon. “I want to have a veneer of, ‘Here’s your reward.’ I don’t want them to go, like, ‘Oh, he’s learned nothing, he’s treating us like cattle again.’”

Obviously, it’s unclear when production might begin on that or the “Rick & Morty” film. In the mean time, you can watch Season 7 of “Rick & Morty” on Adult Swim beginning on October 15.
