Got a Tip?

‘Deadpool 3’: Matthew Vaughn Says The Film Will “Save The MCU” & Give It A “Jolt”

Wait, why is Matthew Vaughn on the MCU train? He’s got a UniversalArgylle” spy movie coming out soon and isn’t involved with Marvel or any of the old Marvel/Fox properties. Well, apparently, he knows a little bit about what’s in store, and on a recent episode of BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, he evidently sang the movie’s praises, going as far as to claim it will “save” the MCU.

“The few snippets that I know about ‘Deadpool vs. Wolverine’ — or ‘Wolverine vs. Deadpool,’ I’m sure that argument between Ryan and Hugh is happening as we speak — are unbelievable,” Vaughn told the podcast ahead of the release of his aforementioned new espionage film, “Argylle,” while perhaps hinting ahead to what the final title of the movie will be.

“That’s going to be the jolt… the Marvel universe is about to have a jolt of them, and it’s going to bring that body back to life… I think Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are about to save the whole Marvel universe,” he continued.

Usually, we might get a little skeptical about it all, but Vaughn has no horse in that race, and for another filmmaker, who is supposed to be promoting his own film, to go out of his way and lavish praise on what is essentially the competition, is no small act in this day and age.

But the filmmaker explained why: he hopes these films will allow for exciting new “X-Men” stories to be told within the MCU.

“I’m a genuine fan of the X-Men; all I want is for the movies to be as good as they should be,” he said.

Additionally, these comments are made in the wake of Vaughn recently saying, “I genuinely don’t know what’s happening with the superhero in the sense that, I do think, maybe we all need a little bit of time off from it.” It’s nearly an about-face comment and maybe that’s because he’s finally heard something to be excited by?

Vaughn previously directed 2011’s “X-Men: First Class,” which jumpstarted a new “X-Men” franchise with a younger generation of actors, including James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto.

So, has Vaughn read the script or taken a peek inside under the hood? It sounds like it. One thing to note, however, is the box office. Many fans often claim that “Deadpool 3” is an instant billion-dollar movie—it’s expected to have a ton of cameos from the 20th Century Fox version of Marvel, a kind of farewell to that era in the same way “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did. The difference, however, is that only one 20th Century Fox Marvel film has ever outgrossed a Spider-Man Sony movie. That’s “X-Men: Days Of Future Past,” which grossed $748 million at the worldwide box office. So the best Fox/Marvel/X-Men movie only ever box-office-bested what is seen as the worst Spider-Man movie, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which only earned $709 million globally.

Even “Spider-Man 3” grossed 895 million worldwide, and even the well-received “Logan,” the best Wolverine film for fans, only ever hit $622 million around the globe.

Not one “X-Men” movie or one “Deadpool” movie has ever reached the $800 million mark worldwide. The highest-grossing “X-Men”-related film ever is “Deadpool 2,” which hit $786 million in 2018. Can “Deadpool 3” or “Deadpool Vs. Wolverine” break that ceiling with an R-rating in 2024 after the flop of “The Marvels”? Time will tell, but before anyone does any of that Babe Ruth boasting, they should recheck those stats first, as “X-Men” and “Wolverine” movie numbers are rather sobering.
