What makes one man kill another? “Death by Lightning” follows the paths of two distinct individuals: President James Garfield and Charles Guiteau. This anticipated Netflix limited series shows how Giteau transformed from Garfield’s greatest admirer into his assassin. Their different stories uniquely intertwine to create one of history’s most fascinating events.

The upcoming series is helmed by creator, writer, and executive producer Mike Makowsky. His previous credits include co-writing the 2019 docudrama “Bad Education.” ‘Lightning’ may focus on past events, but Makowsky finds the subject still relevant for a modern audience. It’s a topic he addressed while previewing the series for Tudum. “The theme of corruption in politics and our bureaucracy feels particularly evergreen these days,” Makowsky said.
‘Lighting’ features several talented performers. Michael Shannon and Matthew MacFadyen portray Garfield and Giteau, respectively. Shannon’s recent films include “The End” and “A Different Man.” MacFadyen notably starred as Tom Wambsgans on “Succession,” winning two Primetime Emmys in the process. Other ‘Lightning’ series regulars include Nick Offerman, Bradley Whitford, Shea Whigham, and Betty Gilpin.
The limited series’ official synopsis:
