Got a Tip?

Denzel Washington To Play Hannibal In Antoine Fuqua’s Historical Epic Scripted By ‘Gladiator’ Writer

With the SAG and WGA strikes in the rearview, we can move ahead with the various projects that have been percolating in Hollywood. And apparently, one of those projects is the big-budget historical epic being devised by filmmaker Antoine Fuqua about the film of the warrior Hannibal. Not only is that film moving closer to actually happening, but Netflix is ready to reveal the A-lister leading the cast—Denzel Washington.

According to Netflix, Denzel Washington is set to star in Antoine Fuqua’s untitled Hannibal film that is currently in development at the streamer. Here’s the brief synopsis for the film:

Based on real-life warrior Hannibal, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The film covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.

As you might expect, Washington is set to play the lead, Hannibal, in the historical epic. At this point, it’s unclear who will be joining the cast, but as we know with these sorts of things, we can probably expect more names in the coming weeks and months, as the film creeps closer to production.

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that John Logan is onboard as the writer of the film. Logan is probably best known as the man behind “Gladiator,” which earned him one of his three Oscar nominations. Other films he’s written include “The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Skyfall,” and “Spectre.” So, this is definitely a guy familiar with writing massive films.

Again, it’s unclear when we might see the Hannibal film arrive on Netflix. But Fuqua has already landed his leading man and has one hell of a writer on the script. So, this is shaping up to be quite the film, if it can stick the landing.
