The “Smurfs” are back! After switching studio homesteads from Sony Pictures to Paramount Pictures, the group of beloved three-apples-high cartoon characters is making their way back to the big screen on July 18, and Paramount has sent us a brand new trailer to share.
The Paramount Animation film has quite the star-studded cast which includes Rihanna, John Goodman, James Corden, Nick Offerman, J.P. Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Marshmello, and Kurt Russell.

When Papa Smurf (Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel (both voiced by Karliak), Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.
Chris Miller directs “Smurfs” from a script by screenwriter Pam Brady with a producing team that consists of Jay Brown, Ty Ty Smith, Rihanna, Ryan Harris, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary.
Other recent features that hail from Paramount Animation include “Transformers One,” “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (a sequel is currently in the works).
This latest installment seems to be learning toward the musical-comedy angle, potentially to tap into the massive popularity of another pint-sized animated franchise, “Trolls.” Then again, it’s not like previous “Smurf” entries didn’t have music in them, and the other people to voice Smurfette were fellow pop singers Katy Perry and Demi Lovato.
