Got a Tip?

Diego Luna’s Narrative Directorial Debut, ‘Abel’ Set For April 2010

Diego Luna is all set to get behind the director’s chair for the drama ‘Abel,’ set for an April 2010 release.

The “Milk” and “Rudo y Cursi” actor Diego Luna held a press conference in Aguascalientes, Mexico recently to announce his new feature-length narrative debut. Luna, perhaps best known by the ladies for his guy on guy kissing scene in Alfonso Cuarón’s “Y Tu Mama Tambien” with fellow thesp Gael García Bernal, said that the film “deals with a universal relationship, that of a father’s and his son. One of the most important things this film will question is why do adults tend to pressure kids into growing up well before their time.” Although somewhat secretive as to the specifics of the story it has been said that the story deals with a young man who has to take care of his family after his father leaves abruptly.

Oscar winner Brigitte Broch will handle the Production Design and José María Yazpik who stars alongside Charlize Theron in Guillermo Arriaga’s upcoming directorial debut, “The Burning Plain” will have an unspecified role.

This will not be Luna’s first film as a director as he previously helmed the little seen boxing documentary “J.C. Chavez” back in ’07. Between Luna and Garcia Bernal, the two acting buddies have worked with a who’s who of name-brand directors including Gus Van Sant, Michel Gondry, Steven Spielberg, Jim Jarmusch, Harmony Korine and Lukas Moodysson. Too bad Garcia Bernal didn’t seem to get any pointers from any on them for his dreadful and little-seen directorial debut, “Deficit” which never even found proper U.S. distribution. Here’s hoping Luna can do something more inspired with “Abel.” [La Cronica de Hoy] – Arturo R. Jiménez
