Barring a decision from the director to head back into the editing bay, we’re going to have two Terrence Malick films hit the big screen this year, which would be unusual, since many years can pass without any trace of new work from him. Of course, earlier this year saw the release of “Knight Of Cups,” while the filmmaker will unveil his decades-in-the-making documentary “Voyage Of Time” this fall. So now is as good a time as any to get acquainted or re-acquainted with his oeuvre, and at least in France, audiences will get a chance to catch one of Malick’s masterworks on the big screen.

The digital 4K restoration of “The Thin Red Line” is arriving in cinemas once again, and like all of Malick’s pictures, this is a theatrical experience that should not be missed. The World War II drama might have been the most fraught production of Malick’s career, with reams of footage shot, only for much of it to wind up on the cutting room and with many actors having their scenes excised entirely. The most significant change was pivoting the focus of the film from Adrien Brody‘s character to Jim Caviezel‘s, yet despite all that, the finished result is truly wonderful and one of the most singular pictures about war ever made.
“The Thin Red Line” returns to theaters in France on August 17th.
