Disney Is Developing A New ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Sequel To Continue The Story Of The Recent Trilogy

Despite the final film in the trilogy underperforming at the box office compared to its predecessor, Fox’s recent ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise reboot has been a huge critical success, thanks, in large part, to filmmaker Matt Reeves. And in a recent report from Variety, despite Fox having a fairly shoddy box office track record in 2019, Disney still thinks it’s a good idea to move forward with a new sequel to the ‘Apes’ franchise.

The report says that while Disney is paring down the number of projects that the new Fox is going to work on, the studio is still moving forward on James Cameron’sAvatar’ sequels (obviously) and a new film in the recent ‘Apes’ series. No word on what shape that film might take, and whether or not Reeves would come back to the franchise in the future (he seems pretty tied up for the next couple of years thanks to ‘Batman,’ however).

As mentioned, thought a critical success, the 2017 trilogy-ending “War for the Planet of the Apes” failed to come close to the box office gold that the previous “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was able to achieve. The 2017 film earned only $147 million domestically and $491 million globally. Compared to ‘Dawn’s’ $209 million domestic total and $711 million worldwide, ‘War’ was a moderate success but is ultimately viewed as a box office disappointment.

Nevertheless, Disney knows a good thing when it sees it, and even though Fox has already cratered its superhero franchises, the Mouse House thinks that the studio could probably pump out at least one more decent ‘Apes’ film. Whether or not that’s true is anyone’s guess. But you have to give the studio the benefit of the doubt, right? The ‘Apes’ films haven’t really let fans down yet.
