Disney Speeding Up The Remake Cycle & Is Developing New Live-Action 'Lilo & Stitch'

So, Disney has decided the studio’s catalog from the early-2000s is ripe to be remade, huh? According to a report from THR, the Mouse House has hired a writer and producers to spearhead a live-action remake of the popular animated film (a little too young to call it a classic, right?) “Lilo & Stitch.” We’re guessing a live-action “Moana” can’t be far behind.

THR says that Disney hired Mike Van Waes to pen the script, which will be produced by the duo of Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich. Those gentlemen will be responsible for bringing the beloved story of a young girl and her alien BFF to the big-screen (or perhaps the Disney streaming service?). “Lilo & Stitch” follows the aforementioned little girl, Lilo, as she gets into some serious hijinks after she befriends an alien named Stitch. The film explores the nature of family and is the basis for many sibling tattoos all around the world.

As for the guys working on the film, the duo of Eirich and Lin are best known for working on the upcoming live-action remake of “Aladdin.” So, clearly, Disney must be excited for the work they’re doing, as they’ve been snatched up to do another one of those money-makers.

Van Waes, on the other hand, is a bit of an unknown. His only credits are for the upcoming ‘Conjuring 2’ spin-off “The Crooked Man” and the “Wizard of Oz” horror remake titled “Not in Kansas.” Neither of these films has been released, so his work is largely unproven. However, it’s interesting to note that the writer of two horror films is bringing a children’s film to life. Again, we have to defer to Disney on this one.

No release date has been given, as there’s still a lot of development that needs to happen still. As mentioned, THR suggests that the “Lilo & Stitch” remake could find its way onto the new Disney streaming service, which is launching in 2019. The studio has already announced a live-action remake of “Lady & the Tramp” for the service.
