After years of hand-wringing and petitions by fans, Daredevil is finally back in the Marvel fold with Charlie Cox, the actor reprising the role from his Netflix tenure as the character. While Cox appeared briefly as Matt Murdock in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” he made his first appearance as Daredevil in the MCU this week in the latest episode of “She-Hulk.” So yes, Daredevil is officially back, and it seems like he’s going to be all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, appearing in the Disney+ series, “Echo” next year and then after that, his own series “Daredevil: Born Again” due in 2024.
Cox has already teased that his Daredevil version in Marvel will be similar to but different from the one presented in the Netflix series, and that’s already bearing out; this episode of “She-Hulk” showed Murdock and Daredevil in a much more humorous light. The next question, however, is who, if anyone, will reprise their roles from the Netflix version of “Daredevil,” the top contenders being actors like Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson (both rumored to reemerge, but mostly just internet whispers at the moment).
With that new ‘Born Again’ series on the horizon, plenty of rumors are already coming out from different corners of the internet. One that received plenty of traction over the summer was that actress Eiza González (“Ambulance,” “Godzilla vs. Kong”) was being looked at to replace Elodie Yung as Elektra. However, that’s been squashed this week. González took to Twitter (see below) late last week to pour cold water on the possibility of taking over the aforementioned superhero role.
“I feel like I’m just gonna get it out of the way because, one, I’m confused as for the amount of hate over this, and two, I feel like it saves people energy,” she wrote. “No, I’m not cast as Elektra in Daredevil. I already have an ongoing series exclusivity contract to [Netflix’s] ‘3 Body Problem’ [project].”
So there you go, cross that rumor off your list.
What we know about ‘Born Again’ is that it will see Cox reunited with fellow “Daredevil” actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who returned as Wilson Fisk, aka, The Kingpin in the “Hawkeye” series. The new Disney+ series takes its title from a storyline from the Frank Miller era of the comic books. Still, given the dark nature of the storyline, it just seems Marvel is borrowing the resurrection-like title to let fans know that a new era and new iteration of the character are on the horizon. Matt Corman and Chris Ord are attached to write and executive produce the next incarnation of the NYC hero.
“Daredevil: Born Again” is set to arrive on Disney+ to stream weekly sometime in the Spring of 2024, suggesting cameras won’t even begin to roll until sometime next year.
