Charlie Cox Says 'Daredevil: Born Again' Will Be "Truthful" To The Tone Of The Comics With A Bit Of Levity

Boy, oh boy, did film fans have a busy weekend the last few days or what? Not only was it the first weekend for the Toronto International Film Festival and the end of Venice, but we also had Disney’s fan convention, D23, which was headlined by Marvel Studios whipping out previews for a lot of its upcoming slate, including the highly-anticipated series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” And with Daredevil, played once again by Charlie Cox, about to show up in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” presumably with a bit of a sense of humor, fans are curious if the grim, gritty DD from the Netflix show is going to carry over to the new series or if the MCU is going to make the hero more silly? Charlie Cox is hinting that it could be a bit of both.

Speaking to Variety, at this year’s D23, Charlie Cox was asked about the tone of ‘Born Again.’ Fans are a bit concerned that Marvel Studios is going to inject too much humor into the upcoming ‘Daredevil’ series and lose the magic that made the Netflix adaptation work well. Marvel has yet to really show off a show or a film that ditches the humor and presents something truly dark and grimy, which is what the Netflix show did best.

So, when Variety asked if fans will see a silly, “slapstick” Daredevil in ‘Born Again,’ Cox was quick to shoot down that fear.

“Not over the course of an entire season. Not with his character. I don’t think that’s truthful enough to the source material,” explained Cox. “But there are plenty of ‘Daredevil comics where there is levity, there is lightheartedness, there is fun. And I think, with 18 episodes, you have time to do a bit of both.”

Obviously, Marvel Studios isn’t going to present a version of Daredevil that doesn’t quip a little bit. However, it does sound as if Cox understands that the core of the character should be serious and fairly grumpy. He is a hero with the unique beliefs of a damaged Catholic who wants to help people (which is why he’s a lawyer) but also struggles with the idea of beating the shit out of bad guys to make it happen.

There’s no exact release date yet for “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, Marvel Studios has teased a spring 2024 timeframe.
