'El Muerto': Bad Bunny Is No Longer Attached To Sony's 'Spider-Man' Spinoff Film

Last year, somewhat surprisingly, Sony announced plans to make a ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film focused on the unknown villain, El Muerto. This was shocking for a number of reasons. Mostly, even the diehard Marvel Comics fans were scratching their heads wondering who El Muerto is. But also, the film was expected to star Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny, a pop star who has only recently dabbled in acting. It seemed like a confusing choice of star and subject, but hey, if it’s connected to Spider-Man, people are intrigued, right? Well, a little more than a year later, even after a director was named, it appears there are major changes in store for the “El Muerto” film.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Bad Bunny was asked about the status of “El Muerto.” The film was seemingly set to begin production soon and a release date in 2024 was thought to be targeted. But recently, the strikes caused some issues with release dates and Sony juggled the release dates of some of its ‘Spider-Man’-related projects, removing “El Muerto” from the schedule completely. And now, according to Bad Bunny, it appears the film is without its star.

“I don’t know what to say,” Martínez said about the film. He went on to say it was a “delicate” situation.

But the real news came when Bad Bunny’s publicist spoke up and said, “Obviously, it’s out.”

So, it would appear, in no uncertain terms, Bad Bunny is no longer associated with “El Muerto.” What this means for the status of the project is still unclear. It wouldn’t be shocking if Sony scraps the project with its star attached. Also, maybe the studio has found a replacement? Clearly, we’ll eventually find out, as the studio has been very excited about getting ‘Spider-Man’ spinoffs into production.

As of now, Sony has “Kraven the Hunter,” “Madame Web,” and “Venom 3” all coming sooner rather than later. But there are a number of other projects, like “El Muerto,” that seem to be stuck in some sort of development limbo. But hey, if you want to see Bad Bunny in an upcoming film, he is one of the stars of the forthcoming film, “Cassandro.”
