Welcome to #FlashbackFriday, where we look at past moments with filmmakers, actors, etc. and highlight something in cinema history that’s fascinating, amusing, perhaps something you never knew or have seen, you name it.
Every year, Star Wars Day is the one day when you can set aside any of your issues with the franchise and celebrate just how impactful the sci-fi/fantasy films have been on millions of peoples’ lives.
Many of us grew up with the Original Trilogy playing on cable TV constantly, or with those VHS tapes beginning to wear out from dozens of repeat viewings. So, for today’s #FlashbackFriday, we’d like to share with you an interview from the glory days of “Star Wars.” Back in 1995, for the VHS home release of the original three films, movie critic Leonard Maltin interviewed the man behind it all, George Lucas. The interview was broken into three parts, with each focusing on a different film in the trilogy.

Lucas covers every aspect of the original films. From breaking up his original script (which covered the whole trilogy) into three separate parts to developing the special effects and working with John Williams on the score, everything is discussed. Plus, there’s the added bonus that this takes place before the Prequel Trilogy soured everyone’s view of the franchise (even though Lucas does hint at the new trilogy he was working on at the time.)
Overall, it’s nice to just sit back and watch an interview with the clearly enthusiastic Lucas discussing his baby. Back before the Prequels sucked the life out of him and he cashed out with Disney, this is the George Lucas that older fans remember fondly.
At the very least, the grainy quality of the interview, combined with the aspect ratio, will bring to mind those days fast-forwarding and rewinding your VHS tapes, trying to find the best scenes and your favorite moments.
