Nerd alert! While Q in the James Bond run of films has mostly been dominated by the classy Britishness of Desmond Llewelyn, and later the John Cleese-ness of John Cleese, for the character's return to the franchise for the first time since "Die Another Day," Sam Mendes has gone a different route.
It looks like bookish-nerd-who-needs-a-haircut is the gameplan here, with a glasses-wearing Ben Whishaw taking the role, and the first image of his Q from the film has hit the web via 007. Not much to this — Daniel Craig's Bond stands in the background with a big screen of computer stuff on a wall behind him. But it will at least be nice to see a younger actor take the role, and perhaps inject some new life into the part, which is due for a bit of a makeover.
Meanwhile, in other Bond news, remember that whole OMG-Bond-gonna-drink-a-Heineken "controversy" from earlier this year? Well, rest assured Bond-heads, everyone's favorite secret agent will be asking for it shaken, not stirred. MI6 reveals that as part of his mission that takes him to other lands in this gritty, grounded world, James Bond will still have time to visit a martini bar where he will consume said libation to everyone's delight. As for that beer? Don't worry, it's integral to the plot. "There is a moment where he drinks Heineken, or rather a beer. But there is a story reason for that. And he does drink other things…," Mendes recently told GQ. What could those other beverages be? Fresca? Yoo-hoo? A root beer float?
You'll find out when "Skyfall" opens on November 9th.
