Discovering a young, fresh musical talent is a tired and overdone movie trope. An unassuming young person has a 9-5, plays cafes and bars at night, gets a makeover and eventually takes on the musical world by storm. “Fisherman’s Friends” offers a new take on that kind of story — a London music exec discovers a group of Cornish fishermen who sing for fun.
Based on a true story, the film sees London music exec Danny traveling to Cornwall and falling head over heels for the old school sounds of a melodic group of fishermen. As Danny attempts to convince them of the benefits of being signed by a major record label, Danny learns a thing or two from the fishermen and their small Cornish town about slowing down and appreciating the little things in life.
The film stars James Purefoy (“A Knight’s Tale”), Meadow Nobrega (“Patrick the Pug”), David Hayman (“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”) and Daniel Mays (“Rogue One”). Take a look at the official synopsis for “Fisherman’s Friends” below:
A fast living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate “fish out of water” as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.
