Guillermo del Toro makes movies that audiences and the Academy adore. “The Shape of Water” won the Best Picture Oscar and three other statues in 2018. Overall, before Sunday, del Toro’s films had earned 34 nominations and 8 Academy Awards. Now, thanks to his epic adaptation of Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein,” that win total is up to 11.

The Netflix release won Production Designer, which gave production designer Tamara Deverell and set decorator Shane Vieau their first Oscar wins. Both were previously nominated in this category in 2022 for “Nightmare Alley.” The film also won the BAFTA Award for Production Design and the Art Directors Guild honor for Period Feature Film. This is the third del Toro film to win this category after “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water.”
“Frankenstein” also took the Costume Design trophy. This was Kate Hawley’s first win on her first nomination. This is the first del Toro film to win this category. Hawley also won the Costume Designer Guild Award for Period Film and the BAFTA Award for her work. The New Zealand designer previously collaborated with del Toro on “Pacific Rim” and “Crimson Peak.” Her credits include “The Lovely Bones,” “The Hobbit” trilogy, and “Edge of Tomorrow.” She was also the designer on the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.“
Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey won the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling. This was the first nomination for each. They previously took the BAFTA Award and won the Special Makeup category at the Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Awards. This is the second del Toro film to take this category after “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Hill, Samuel, and Furey previously worked with del Toro on “Nightmare” and “Shape.” Samuel’s other credits include del Toro’s “Crimson Peak,” “Pacific Rim,”“Chicago,” “Being Julia,” “Hairspray,” “The Last of Us,” and “Fellow Travelers.” A hairstyling artist, Furey’s résumé includes “Crimson Peak,”“A Simple Favor,” and “Priscilla.”
“Frankenstein” also earned nominations for Supporting Actor (Jacob Elordi), Adapted Screenplay (del Toro), Cinematography (Dan Lausten), Original Score (Alexandre Desplat), and Best Sound.
