Geena Davis Is Vehemently Opposed To A 'Thelma & Louise' Remake: "What Would Be The Point?"

Thelma & Louise” is a classic. There are no two ways about it. But something being a classic, nowadays, means that studios are excited about the prospect of a remake. But according to one of the stars of the film, remaking “Thelma & Louise” would be a complete mistake.

Speaking to IndieWire, while at the Bentonville Film Festival, Geena Davis was asked quite a bit about the classic drama, “Thelma & Louise.” She spoke at length about Ridley Scott and how he approached directing the film. However, she was also asked about the idea of some studio wanting to remake “Thelma & Louise” for a new audience, considering the film is over 30 years old now. When asked about a remake, Davis was quick to squash the idea.

‘“Well, it must never be remade,” Davis explained. “I mean, it’s 30-something years later, and it holds up more than others. I’m not saying this because I’m in it, but it really holds up. And there’s no need to revisit it. What would be the point? In my opinion.”

For those who haven’t seen the film, “Thelma & Louise” tells the story of two friends on a road trip that they could never expect. After a short trip is upended with violence, the duo have to escape the law.

While she’s opposed to a “Thelma & Louise” remake, Davis isn’t someone who is against the idea of remakes, as a whole. She just has one simple criteria for why a film gets remade.

“It would have to be better,” she said. “I’m all in favor of making movies that didn’t really work again and making it work. That would be great. Thank God nobody ever tried to remake ‘Casablanca’ or something. … So far! I’m grateful. I would not be happy about that.”

Unfortunately for Davis, just because a film is good and still relevant, that isn’t totally going to stop a studio from remaking it. Of course, we have yet to hear any studio begin development on a new take on “Thelma & Louise.” Perhaps it will stand the test of time and be the rare classic that doesn’t get a TV reboot or a modern-day remake. It would be incredibly difficult for any remake to match the intensity and joy of the original. But hey, that hasn’t stopped any studio before.
