Director Mike Flanagan Says His ‘Carrie’ Series Is Taking Priority Over ‘Exorcist: Deceiver’

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan is quite the busy fella these days with his latest Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck” heading to theaters this weekend, we’ve got a bit of a status update on his more horror-focused projects, a new interaction of King’s teenage telepathy thriller “Carrie” in the form of an Amazon series and a new “Exorcist” installment at Blumhouse called “The Exorcist: Deceiver.”

“Production hasn’t started, we need to finish ‘Carrie’ first. No way it’s coming out next March. Nothing to worry about, though,” Flanagan said in a recent post on his Tumblr page while responding to a fan’s question about the status of his gestating “Exorcist” film and if it’ll be ready for release by March 2026.

That’s not the only update on the horror show. We’ve learned from Variety that a wave of new casting announcements for the “Carrie” remake series as actors will be joining previously revealed folks on the call sheet such as Summer H. Howell as the next version of Carrie White, Siena Agudong is Sue Snell, and Matthew Lillard has been tapped for the role of Principal Grayle.

The rest of the cast, named this week, includes Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, and Joel Oulette as Tommy.

Previously, Flanagan was brought in to replace David Gordon Green (“Halloween” Trilogy) on the legacy horror sequel after the last installment “The Exorcist: Believer” (brought back actress Ellen Burstyn from the original William Friedkin-directed film) failed to impress critics or audiences, despite an announcement from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures securing the horror franchise for three movies at great expense.

We shouldn’t be shocked that Flanagan is focusing on “Carrie” first, given he’s adapted two other King stories before with his recent film “The Life of Chuck” and “The Shining” sequel, “Doctor Sleep,” which starred Ewan McGregor as a grown version of Danny Torrance.

Horror fans will just have to be patient for updates on “The Exorcist: Deceiver.”
