Netflix has landed one of the season’s hottest book packages, securing Belle Burden’s bestselling memoir “Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage” with Gwyneth Paltrow attached to star and executive produce. Multiple trades say the streamer emerged from a heated auction for the project, which gives Netflix a polished prestige package with a major star already locked in.

Published by The Dial Press on January 13, “Strangers” follows Burden as she revisits the collapse of her 20-year marriage after her husband abruptly leaves in the early days of the pandemic. The publisher describes the memoir as a reckoning with betrayal, family history, and self-reinvention, and the book was billed as an instant No. 1 New York Times bestseller.
The adaptation already has a strong spine. Heidi Schreck, whose “What the Constitution Means to Me” became a Broadway breakout and earned two Tony Award nominations, is writing the script, while Stacey Sher is producing. That is a sharp pairing for material built on private collapse, emotional disorientation, and the unnerving realization that intimacy can curdle into something unrecognizable.
For Paltrow, the role gives her a prominent new starring vehicle after her triumphant acting turn in Josh Safdie’s acclaimed 2025 A24 feature “Marty Supreme.” In the meantime, “Strangers” now moves ahead at Netflix with Paltrow, Schreck, and Sher already in place—exactly the kind of upscale literary adaptation streamers like to move on fast once the right pieces snap together.
