Hugh Jackman Says His Performance In The First 'X-Men' Was Only "Average"

Once upon a time, Hugh Jackman was just a brawny dude from Australia, who looked good in mutton chops, and seemed like the right physical choice to play Wolverine in the still nascent “X-Men” franchise. That was over fifteen years ago. Now, the actor is a huge worldwide star, and is gearing up for his third solo outing as the mutant in the forthcoming “Logan.” But according to Jackman, he didn’t get it right when he first started out as the superhero.

Speaking with E! at the PGA Awards over the weekend, Jackman admitted that he was still getting his feet wet when he unleashed the claws in “X-Men.”

“I was kind of struggling, to be honest,” he said. “It was the first movie I had ever done in America. I was pretty tight. I was nervous. I was average, to be honest, at best. No one was saying anything and I sort of thought I was getting away with it, but I wasn’t.”

Even more, Jackman says he couldn’t even bear looking at the dailies because it was like “watching someone put a lampshade over a light.” But the studio chief at the time, Tom Rothman, had the faith in Jackman that the actor didn’t have in himself, and that gut feeling certainly paid off.
