In a new interview with People, the 37-year-old actor confirmed that a follow-up to the 2007 horror actioner starring Will Smith is still “something that is in the works.” “We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” Jordan continued. “It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming that one, but I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with [Smith]. Being somebody that I’ve looked up to for a really long time, to be able to work with Will is something I’m really looking forward to. I’m really excited.”

“I Am Legend 2” was first announced back in March 2022, just weeks before Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony and derailed his career. Many wondered if the sequel would go ahead after Smith became persona non grata in Hollywood for a time, but Smith confirmed late last year that the sequel had a script ready to go. And now that Smith is back on the big screen in “Bad Boys: Ride Or Die” this weekend, an official theatrical release date for “I Am Legend 2” feels imminent.

Smith provided an update of his own to ET about the sequel last month.  “I think it’s looking good,” said the actor, confirmed he and Jordan had worked on developing the film together. “Really solid ideas…I think we’re going to make it onscreen together. That dude is the truth, so I would love to do that.” The 2007 original, based on Richard Matheson‘s 1954 novel of the same name, stars Smith as Robert Neville, a scientist surviving in a world where a disease has affected the rest of humanity and turned them into zombie-vampiric creatures. The film was a big hit for Warner Bros., making $585.4 million off a $150 million budget.

So will “I Am Legend 2” be the next project for Jordan and Smith? Jordan has Ryan Coogler‘s untitled movie up next, due in theaters next March, but it’s possible this sequel could shoot later this year.  Stay tuned on that.
