Jason Momoa Talks Beer Drinking & Other Similarities To His Aquaman Character: "We Obviously Have A Lot Of Hair"

Superhero film fans get ready — the marketing machine for “Aquaman” is in full swing. That means we’re going to see a lot of Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and director James Wan doing the publicity rounds. And kicking things off is the latest issue of Total Film (via CBM), which gives a ton of details about the upcoming underwater adventure, as well as some great quotes from Jason “My Man!” Momoa.

But before we get to the lead actor, director Wan wants to explain what drew him to the film, especially considering the hero is routinely the butt of many superhero jokes. Wan says, “[The] more I thought about it, the biggest thing that struck me at the time was the fact that we’ve seen incarnations of the Flash on TV and stuff like that, but we’ve never really seen an ‘Aquaman’ movie at all. That part got me very excited. I feel like the landscape is quite littered with a lot of superhero movies, and the opportunities to do something that feels different and looks different, that one has really seen before – it felt like the freshest path into the superhero world.”

Wan also wants to make sure fans know that “Aquaman” is a standalone film, and even though it’s linked to the DCEU, don’t expect any crossovers with Cyborg or Batman.

“It’s literally a standalone movie. Not because I wasn’t open to the idea of potentially another character from the bigger universe, but it just so happens that the roads that these characters go on are not associated with any of the other superhero characters. I keep saying that it would be weird to see Batman in Atlantis, or even Superman for that matter,” Wan explains.

He continues, “Wonder Woman might be the only one that feels like they can belong, that they’re siblings of some kind. But no, and that’s the best way. This way, I can tell my own story and not be affected by what they’re doing over there and they’re not affected by what I’m doing over here. But we all live in the same space.”

Even though James Wan has proven himself to be a very competent director, helming “The Conjuring” films, as well as “Furious 7,” the real star of the show is the leading man, Jason Momoa. After years of being cast, Momoa finally gets his chance to star in his own “Aquaman” film. And trust us, he’s psyched.

The actor is so ready to release “Aquaman” that he’s willing to use the film as the ‘bridge’ to other DCEU superheroes. “DC gets bashed on a lot…you know ‘Justice League,’ what happened there. I just feel like, if it is [a bridge], then great. I just think it’s a great story. It’s definitely colorful. We’re underwater. It’s a world we’ve never seen before. If that’s what it takes to bridge it? Fuck. Put it on my back. I’ll guess I’ll help everyone if you need me!” he says.

Judging by the character’s appearance in the aforementioned shitshow known as “Justice League,” and the various trailers and teasers for “Aquaman,” it’s hard to determine where the actor ends and the character begins, as Momoa’s trademark personality seems woven into the DNA of Aquaman.

Momoa talks his similarities to the character, saying, “I think Aquaman definitely has a lot of me. I’m not that jaded, but he’s definitely ornery and playful and likes beer! He’s a bit of a smartass. We obviously have a lot of hair.”

And if there’s an audience demand for an “Aquaman 2,” then the actor has some ideas already. “I definitely have an opinion. Even when we were shooting ‘Aquaman,’ I have the opening of ‘Aquaman 2’ ready. I went in and pitched it to Peter Safran, and I pitched it to Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome… But yeah, I have plans for ‘Aquaman 2,’” revealed Momoa.

“Aquaman” hits theaters December 21. Are you ready?
