Jessica Chastain & Andrew Garfield Are Unrecognizable In First-Look Photos From 'The Eyes Of Tammy Faye'

One of the most anticipated films arriving this fall is the drama, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Not only is the real-life story the film is inspired by worthy of attention, but the fact that the feature is led by Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain in the roles of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, respectively, is enough to guarantee a ticket sale for most film fans. And in the first-look photos and interview from People, it’s clear the hype about ‘Eyes’ is real.

For those unaware, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” tells the story of Tammy Faye Bakker and her televangelist husband Jim Bakker. Decades ago, the duo rose to prominence thanks to their religious TV show that was able to win them millions of adoring fans. However, the seemingly idyllic marriage between the two was rocked by a sex scandal involving Jim Bakker and Jessica Hahn. And it’s the strength of Tammy Faye, dealing with this sort of scandal, that drew Chastain to the role.

“Here’s a woman that I had an idea of because of what I was fed about her,” explained Chastain. “Even the thing about the mascara running down her face. There is not one picture of her with mascara running down her face in reality. But people were always making her into a clown and punishing her for the mistakes of her husband, which all throughout history women have been the victim of, atoning for the sins of men.”

Obviously, you can’t see those images from “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and not talk about the makeup work being done on Chastain. It goes well beyond some heavy mascara, for sure. Depending on the time period of the picture from the film, it’s clear there is going to be some heavy prosthetic usage in the drama. But judging by these first-look pictures, they’ve done a pretty solid job of making Chastain resemble the real Tammy Faye.

“Every moment, I had something on my face,” said Chastain. “I have a dimple in my chin that she didn’t have, so we would seal that up. Her face was more round than mine, so I would have things on my cheeks. Their expertise just helped me so much with my confidence in playing her.”

“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is expected to arrive in theaters on September 17. You can see the first-look photos below:
