Olivia Colman is everywhere right now. Coming off her third Oscar nomination in four years, Best Actress in “The Lost Daughter,” she’s also the lead in Sam Mendes’ “Empire Of Light” and surely will be in the Oscar conversation. But she has another picture coming out this December as well. Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to “Joyride,” directed by Emer Reynolds and written by Ailbhe Keogan. The heartfelt road-trip comedy stars Olivia Colman, Charlie Reid, Lochlann O Mearáin (“Love and Friendship”), Olwen Fouéré (“The Northman”), Ruth McCabe (“Philomena”), and Tommy Tiernan. Magnolia will release the film in theaters and on demand Friday, December 23. The company also revealed the official trailer and poster today.

“Joyride” is an Irish-British coming-of-age comedy with a lot of coincidental intrigues. The film centers on a headstrong solicitor (Colman) who plans to offload her newborn baby to her sister. But that plan is suddenly derailed when a vulnerable but opinionated teenager (Charlie Reid) steals the taxi she’s in.
Here’s the official synopsis:
JOYRIDE follows 12-year-old Mully (Reid), who, after fleeing his father, steals a taxi and is shocked to find a woman, Joy (Colman), in the back seat with a baby. Joy has decided to give her child away to a friend, and Mully needs some distance from his debt-ridden dad, who’s after the cash Mully has with him. And so two lovable rogues – a complicated middle-aged mother and a troubled adolescent – go on a journey across Ireland, gradually finding in each other the friendship, love, and learning they never knew they needed.
Ingenious Media presents with Embankment Films and Screen Ireland A Subotica Film. Directed by Emer Reynolds, JOYRIDE is written by Ailbhe Keogan and produced by Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan. Executive producers are Tim Haslam, Hugo Grumbar, Peter Touche, Christelle Conan, Dearbhla Regan, and Ailbhe Keogan.
“Joyride” drives into theaters and on digital December 23 via Magnolia Pictures. Watch the new trailer below.
