Julie Taymor’s ‘The Glorias’ Skips Theaters & Heads To Amazon Prime Video Next Month

There’s good news and bad news regarding Julie Taymor’s Sundance film “The Glorias” and its September 25 release date. The good news is that the film is only being delayed by several days, arriving on September 30. However, the bad news is that you won’t be able to see the feature in theaters, as the film’s distributors, Roadside Attractions and LD Entertainment, have decided to release the film straight to streaming.

According to Deadline, Taymor’s upcoming biopic about Gloria Steinem, which stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the famous feminist, is headed to Amazon Prime Video at the end of September instead of attempting to open in theaters. And if you’re not a Prime Video member, you will also have the option of watching the feature on VOD.

Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff said, “The message of Gloria’s life and activism and spirit speak so strongly to the current moment, and we collectively decided to pivot from a theatrical release to this new, digital plan to give the film its widest audience, right away.”

As mentioned, “The Glorias” debuted earlier this year at Sundance and is the latest from Taymor, who is probably best known as the filmmaker behind “Frida,” “Across the Universe,” and “Titus.” We saw the film earlier this year, and in our review, we said, “‘The Glorias’ stumbles when it plays the notes of a conventional biopic. It is only when Julie Taymor starts diving into the extraordinary work of Gloria Steinem, and the women that made her who she is, that the film blossoms into something special.”

“The Glorias” will now be available on Amazon Prime Video and VOD on September 30.
