‘The Keepers’ Director Edited Out A Whole Other Murder

With the massive successes of “The Jinx” and “Making a Murderer,” the true crime docuseries is a hot commodity right now. The newest true crime binge-watch is “The Keepers” on Netflix. The docuseries covers the 1969 murder of a nun in Baltimore. However, it seems like there was also another plot thread in the series that was explored but never made it to the screen.

In a recent interview with Collider, director Ryan White talked about some of the things he had to cut from the series. ”Yeah, we documented a whole other murder. A girl named Grace Montanye, who was murdered in the same time period as the other Catholic girl,” he revealed. “It was one of those fascinating stories, and should be a documentary in itself, and her family we worked with a lot, we spent a lot of time on that story, but we didn’t feel like there was enough connected threads, in the end, to include it in ‘The Keepers.’ But it was a horrific story, and her family was lovely, and I really wish we could have included it in some way.”

Hearing this immediately entices fans of the docuseries to want to hear more about this story. If Netflix was to pursue a potential sequel series to “The Keepers,” or another series altogether, the story of Grace Montanye could be a great follow-up. Unlike “The Jinx” or “Making a Murderer,” the point of the “The Keepers” isn’t about solving the crime or giving the audience the answers they’re hoping for. “The Keepers” shows how the murder of Sister Cathy Cesnick affected a community and shed light on a sexual abuse scandal. So, following the series with a “What happens next?”-type series doesn’t really ring true. However, covering a tangential crime could allow for the “The Keepers” to continue to stand on its own.

In fact, White says later in the interview, he doesn’t really have any plans to do a second season of the show, and isn’t documenting any of the recent developments. “No. No, I haven’t been documenting, because I think my commitment right now is to ‘The Keepers,’ which I see as a seven part series that was on this journey with Jean, and we felt like it had reached and end, so my commitment right now is to making sure that her story and the story of all these other survivors in the series have the impacts that they deserve. So that’s what I’m spending my time doing, and promoting the series, and talking to people like yourself, so I have no current plans to make a season two or even do any follow up, but that’s not to say that I don’t hope that the series leads to more answers. I just don’t think I need to document that process.”

So, will the footage surrounding the investigation into Grace’s murder ever see the light of day? Will they ever have a follow-up? It’s unlikely at this point, but never say never.
