We all know the folks who work at Marvel Studios are trained pretty well to never really give any spoilers and to really avoid confirming anything that was previously reported until it’s appropriate to do so. And the person who is most secretive has to be Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. So, it is incredibly rare when an interview with Feige actually confirms a long-running rumor, especially when it might be a spoiler for an upcoming film. However, that is seemingly what happened when talking about Charlie Cox and the character of Daredevil.
Speaking to CinemaBlend, Kevin Feige was asked about the potential of Charlie Cox officially joining the MCU as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, in a future project. Instead of the stock answer, vaguely denying the rumor or avoiding the question entirely, Feige not only confirmed Charlie Cox would play Daredevil in the MCU but basically confirmed it’ll be happening at some point.
“If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil,” confirmed Feige. “Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.”
Additionally, in a separate interview with ScreenRant, Feige suggested more Netflix characters could join the fold, though remained vague about it. “The good news is, all will be revealed when people actually finally watch,” he said, coyly.
Now, unless you’re a diehard MCU fan or someone familiar with the contractual behind-the-scenes situation at Marvel, you might be confused. Charlie Cox played Daredevil for three seasons of a solo show and one season of a team-up “Defenders” series on Netflix, right? And that took place in the MCU, right? Well, yes and no. The Netflix “Daredevil” series, along with all of the other Marvel series on the streamer, was produced by Marvel Television, not Marvel Studios. And Kevin Feige has been vocal in saying those shows aren’t officially part of the MCU canon. So, there was still a question about whether or not Cox would eventually keep his Daredevil role if/when that character showed up in the MCU proper. So, to answer that question, Feige has definitively confirmed that Cox would indeed be Daredevil. Which begs the question—when?
The long-running rumor surrounding Charlie Cox is that he is bound to show up as Matt Murdock (maybe not in costume as Daredevil) in the MCU in the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” He would play the role of Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) lawyer, after the young Spider-Man’s secret identity is outed by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) at the end of ‘Far From Home.’ Depending on which leaks you believe, this isn’t so much of a rumor as it has already been confirmed. But Marvel Studios has been mum about anything really to do with ‘No Way Home,’ especially when it comes to new/returning characters that will be surprising for fans. (Let’s not even get started about the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield situation.)
However, it’s quite clear that Feige is willing to confirm Cox’s role as Daredevil, which can be interpreted as Cox is going to show up very soon as Matt Murdock in…something. And as of now, the biggest bet is that he’ll help Peter Parker in ‘No Way Home.’ Regardless, fans of the Netflix “Daredevil” series can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
