Controversial filmmaker Lars Von Trier (“Antichrist,” “Dancer In The Dark”) has reportedly secured financing from the Danish film fund and will be able to move forward with a new film titled, “After.” The update comes to us from French news outlet Agence France-Presse’s report (via BFMTV) confirming that the Danish Film Institute has granted the film 1.3 million kroner (roughly about $116, 000 dollars) and would likely mean he’ll be shooting that project in Denmark.
Von Trier revealed two years ago that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and had been temporarily living in a nursing home to get proper care but still gave signs he would crack on with more movies if the stars aligned, and it looks like that has happened.
There is also talk from longtime friend Peter Aalbæk Jensen (producer and co-founder of Zentropa) about how the film will be shot to accommodate von Trier’s new normal with Parkinson’s and should be able to complete the mysterious new movie. Jensen spoke with the Danish outlet Filmmagasinet Ekko (English translation via Google Translate) and talked about how the filmmaker may use his health issues as a creative force for whatever he makes moving forward.
“He has always used limitations for something creative, and now it is his own physical limitations that he weaves into the creative.”
“Between his ears, he is the same as he has always been, and then it is just his body and age that start to hit him. He has Parkinson’s, and it is the disease that sticks. But there are several examples of how you can work well as an instructor with Parkinson’s, and we are also betting on that with Lars.”
The producer also added minor details about “After” by stating it is “about death and the afterlife.” Beyond that vague tagline, we’ll have to wait to see what the story will explore and who von Trier will cast in various parts.
However, we wouldn’t be too shocked if he could coax actors he’s worked with in the past to jump into the deep end with the director on this next adventure.
